HeatSwap

About HeatSwap

HeatSwap answers one practical question: is a heat pump cheaper to run than a gas furnace, propane, heating oil or electric-resistance heat where you live? We compare the annual energy cost of each heating system across all 51 US states using public-domain government data and the standard ENERGY STAR energy math.

What we do

We take residential fuel prices from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), convert every fuel to the same useful-heat unit (BTU) with the ENERGY STAR thermal-conversion constants, and divide by each system's efficiency to estimate annual running cost. The result is a free calculator, a page for every state, head-to-head fuel comparisons, plain-English efficiency explainers and savings rankings.

How we work

Every figure is computed transparently from a committed, dated data snapshot and attributed to its source. We disclose every assumed efficiency and seasonal COP, and we never invent a missing value — see the full methodology.

Independence

HeatSwap is an independent reference site. We do not sell heat pumps, furnaces or installation, and we are not affiliated with any manufacturer or utility. The site is supported by advertising.
